No More Medicine Concept Project

No More Medicine (Concept Art Project)

High quality images available on my Artstation here

Will The Techman

Meeper The AppleBot

Atlas The Gentle Robot

Scavenger's Hospital

Armadillo Transporter

This has been a tough but very satisfying project to complete. For this unit of university we were told to create 5 concept turnarounds set in "A World Without" a particular element (I chose antibiotics). The world has few antibiotics that work, so the remaining humans use technology to enhance their bodies and band together with robots to find effective medicine in the ruins of civilisation.

Concept Paintings

The style I used was heavily inspired by the work of Nikolaj Severin and Matt Betteker's LEGO concept art, attempting to replicate their styles really helped me achieve a clear and professional layout of my work, alongside teaching me a lot about digital painting and key decisions in the concepting process. Nikolaj's ethos of the first 10 minutes of a painting being some of the most vital in deciding shape, lighting, colour and composition really helped me.

This project also helped me learn how to intergrate Blender block-outs into my design process and the importance of clearly constructed shape design. I do want to explore Blender further, but I doubt I'll be a 3d modeller any time soon!

I do wish I had more time to do more environmental work for this project as I think the concept paintings really helped me evoke a sense of story and sense of place for my characters to inhabit. If I had a chance to do it again, I would have loved to draw some keyframes with the finalised designs in an environment to demonstrate what a story with these characters could have looked like, along with being a way to show off what I've learnt on replicating Severin and Betteker's styles.

A special thank you to everyone who critiqued my work, Jude Maddock-Youngs for reccomending me some brilliant texture brushes and Jake Bacon for sharing his process on doing concept painting.

Leyendecker Studies

I was following along this tutorial by youtuber Oridays and managed to find a great amount of improvement through the continual process of a blind copy, analysis and redrawing. Leyendecker has a particularly animated and alive way of drawing his faces and I think this managed to help me replicate that.
